Summer Bucket List

Now that summer is upon us, I need a bucket list! I love bucket lists because they can help solve the “I don’t care, what do you want to do” dilema that we all seem to face. Just take a quick look at your bucket list and BOOM, plans made! It is usually hard, for me anyway) to create my own bucket lists because you have to come up with the items to put on it. If you were able to come up with the items, you wouldn’t be faced with the “I don’t care, what do you want to do” dilema. Here is a good Couples Summer Bucket List to get you rolling!

Outfit of the Day

Here is my first post about “fashion.” I don’t really follow fashion & I don’t really know anything about fashion, but I loooove shopping. I can safely say that I’ve never been ahead of any trends. In fact, I’m known to strongly voice my negative opinions on new fads (mostly towards my friends wearing them, I’m talking to you Melissa). Then approx 6 months later I have a sudden change of heart and have to call my friends (again, talking to you Melissa) and eat some crow. This has happened on the following occasions:

skinny jeans. I was so against skinny jeans but once I came around, I was hooked and haven’t purchased anything but skinnies since 2009.

leather leggings. Sooo against leather leggings no matter what Lauren Conrad said. Then one day, a pair from the Kardashian Collection sold me. I’ve since upgraded these… And purchased a few more additional pairs.

fur vests. Again, soo against. I never actually purchased one (yet), but I’m always down to borrow one for anyone willing to let me borrow theirs after I made fun of it previously.

“turban” headbands. Thought they were silly and way too hippie. Now hippie is basically my second language and I wear headbands (yes even low, across my forehead) all the time.

high-waisted shorts. No thank you, not for me. Until I fell in love with crop tops and now I need to own as many pairs as I can.

I’m sure there are more, and that only took be about 5 mins and zero thought to come up with. If you know of anything I made fun of you for wearing and then came to you with my tail between my legs reneging on my word, please let me know. Also, I’m sorry 🙂

BACK to my outfit of the day. One trend I was always down for was maxi skirts and recently maxi skirts with crop tops. Love them to death. My husband hates them (sorry, not sorry) and I could wear them all the time. Here was one I wore today!

Skirt: American Eagle (outlet)
Top: Charlotte Russe (clearance last year)
Necklace: Francescas (full price, this year)

maxi skirt & crop top

#YesAllWomen

Had to re-blog because I simply couldn’t write it better if I tried.

in transit

#YesAllWomen

Because all women have walked to their car in the dark, keys clutched tight in hand, one poking out between two fingers.

Because when I go out to bars or clubs, I have to think about whether what I’m wearing is too suggestive, instead of putting on whatever I please.

Because I feel the need to apologize when I’m not wearing makeup or my hair hasn’t been washed, or when I’m generally looking anything other than flawless.

Because there was nothing I could do about the man who touched me inappropriately in the middle of Gillette Stadium as I waited for my then-boyfriend to come out of the bathroom. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STADIUM.

Because there was also nothing I could do when a man touched me inappropriately in the middle of a crowded street, his arm around his girlfriend. Because retaliating in the way I wanted to…

Pure Barre

Oh Pure Barre, how I love you!

Screen Shot 2014-04-22 at 5.27.40 PM

In all honestly, Pure Barre really has been the thing that has kept my sane throughout the last few months. I had heard about this Pure Barre thing here and there for a littlewhile and even have good friends who had urged me to try a class out. Of course I hadn’t listened and was content running on a treadmill in my basement and hating life (it was winter in Ohio, there were few options). I was intrigued with the idea of Pure Barre and its low impact class style with ballet, pilates & whatever other influences that I had been told went into the class, but the cost at $20 a class roughly and the 35 minute drive to the closest studio weren’t really up my alley. I can also note that running has been the only consistent exercise that I have ever stuck with, so I didn’t have high hopes for adding Pure Barre into my life.

I was laying in bed one morning, debating on whether it was time to finally get up and start my day (it wasn’t), but I had gone through my normal procrastination routine of Email, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TimeHop, CNN, Pinterest and back to Facebook to see if anything new had happened in the last 20 minutes (nope) and resorted to opening my Groupon App. Basically this would be one of the best decisions I ever made. See, procrastination IS key. The first thing Groupon recommend for me was a package at Pure Barre. It offerend 10 classes for $69 dollars. SCORE. I could absolutely handle committing to driving to 10 classes if they were only $7 a class! I signed up for my first class about 2 weeks later as it took me 2 solid week to muster up the courage to actually try this unknown.

I was addicted about 3 classes in.

Here is me doing some Pure Barre moves on our honeymoon

The first few classes I felt like a fish out of water. I felt like I was flailing around and not doing any of it right. How can lifting my leg only 1 inch, or standing on my tip toes and squatting my legs only 1 inch or doing a crunch where I only move 1 inch or using a 1 lb weight really do anything? But lo and behold my seat (Pure Barre’s word for butt) was shaaaking after about 8 leg lifts, my thighs were shaaaking after a few squats and my abs were shaaaking after one set of crunches and my arms? My arms felt like jello after using 1 lb weights. The next day I felt it even more.

It took me about 20 days to use my 10 free classes and I immediately took advantage of their “Bride to Be” package which gave me 3 months unlimited classes! I have been consistently going to classes ever since then. The first class I took was 12/20/2013 and as of 5/23/2014 I have completed 84 classes. My original goal was to hit 100 classes because YOU GET TO WEAR A TUTU AND TIARA DURING CLASS and I really want to do that, before the wedding, but that didn’t happen. This was an unrealistic goal anyway because on the day I made it my “goal,” I would have had to go to a class every single day from then until the wedding. Now my goal is to hit 100 classes before we leave for our RV Honeymoon Adventure (read more about that here) and I’m 100% confident I will be wearing that tutu and tiara in no time!

When people ask my why I’m obsessed with Pure Barre, I always hesitate before I answer. Not because I don’t love it, but because the answer is so much more complex than “because I got skinny” or “because I got abs” or “because I love the people there.” All of which is true, but it is so much more than that. On the (sad) days that I don’t get to go to a class, I feel very off  that day. The physical changes are second (although greatly appreciated) to the happiness, inner strength & confidence I feel when I leave class. It is the only 55 minutes that I dedicate to myself ever. I refuse to let my mind wander away from the instructors cues and I only focus or perfecting my form or getting a little lower. I don’t think about reception seating plans, or wedding flowers or anything wedding; I don’t think about work; I don’t think about anything other than what position my body is supposed to be in or what muscle I’m supposed to be working. It is the perfect escape from the craziness that is wedding planning (or life in general).

Here are the things I love most about Pure Barre:

1. It doesn’t get easier, it just gets better. Once you learn exactly what muscles you are supposed to be using – did you know you can move your legs by contracting your abs?!? neither did I! – the movements get better because you’re using your muscles better and deeper.

2. The classes are never the same. Although there will always be a warm up, thigh work, seat work, floor work, 7 minutes of abs and then a final stretch, you never know what specific series you’re going to do that class. It is great! Some series you will learn you like more than others, but you always have to give it 110%.

3. I got to vamp up my legging collection (& grippy sock collection).  It is the perfect excuse to buy all the leggings and tank tops and jackets your little heart can desire (okay, maybe not all that you can desire) but you do need to have the appropriate clothes for class. As I had mentioned, I used to run. I do not run in leggings so I went on a little shopping spree to update my wardrobe for all the classes I was going to be taking. Also, the perfect time to buy grippy socks. I have a whole drawer dedicated to grippy socks.

I will keep my “tuck on” and “lift.tone.burn” my way through life, knowing that I have 55 minutes to myself at Pure Barre to center and ground me for whatever life throws at me that day! Thank You Pure Barre for rocking!

Dream Kitchen Must Haves

I spent all my college days eating ramen noodles and hot dogs cooked in the microwave because I had zero interest in cooking.. rather learning to cook. I shopped strictly the chip/candy/processed food aisles in the grocery stores. But around 23, I started to dabble in cooking and realized that I loved it. Now I am no chef and I follow recipes very strictly so I’m not sure it is really cooking as opposed to just following directions really well. Either way, I now spend a lot of time in the kitchen and am always seeing thats I just simply don’t know how I live without them. Here are just a few:

kitchen

I never have the right place for my onions, tomatoes or potatoes. This is perfect!

kitchen2

I absolutely hate clutter, and I consider appliances clutter. I want them hidden and this is the cutest and most perfect way to hide them!

kitchen4

Self explanatory on why this one is needed. No more scraps falling onto the ground because the trash can is right there!

kitchen6

Kitchens are like bathrooms.. there are never enough outlets. AND these outlets are hidden. Perfect.

kitchen5

This isn’t such a “must have” … wait, yes it is!

Do you have any of these in your kitchen? Have any other dream kitchen must haves? I’d love to know!

The Moscow Mule

As the blog name might foreshadow, I like cocktails. I don’t necessarily know how to make a good one, but I know a good one when I drink it. I’m not sure how I missed out Moscow Mules my entire life (a whopping 25 years), but I did. I’m here to save you from a lifetime of sadness if you haven’t had one yet. No matter how they are served, Moscow Mules are tasty BUT they taste just a little bit better in the copper mugs. My favorite are the ones with the little dents in them! Get some here. Moscow Mule: 1/2 oz. simple syrup 2 oz. vodka 1/2 lime – juiced 4 oz. ginger beer (the alcoholic kind, please) I’ve had several variations of the Moscow Mule, cucumber, strawberry orange.. they are all good, but I like a straight up Moscow Mule the best. At least for today. xoxo, Rachel

People Watching is an Art

Do you people watch?

It is perhaps one of my most favorite things to do. ever. It doesn’t matter where: restaurants, airports, the mall. It literally does not matter. Not only do I people watch, but I’m also always trying to figure people’s stories out. When I’m around a person or group of people for more than 30 seconds I create the most elaborate stories in my mind about who they are, what they are doing, etc. I’m always trying to figure out who is related to who? Is someone a wife, girlfriend or mistress? What is this person’s job? Do they even have a job?

For example:

We were on an airplane the other day and a group of 4 individuals (2 50ish adults and 2 teenagers  boarded the plane and then began to try to get everyone to switch seats with them so they could sit together. Now that they caused enough of a scene for me to put down #GIRLBOSS (great book, read it) I was intrigued. It looked like the 2 teenagers were bf and gf because they hugged and said “great seeing you, blah blah blah) but then once everyone sat down, the mom came back up to the flight attendant asking one more time if they could all switch seats. The flight attendant made some remark about trying to get the bf and gf to sit together and the mom quickly said “oh no, no no” then she said something in a whisper that I couldn’t hear. Even more intrigued. The girl teenager was seated right in front of me about halfway through the flight, the mom came up and talked to the girl for about 20 minutes. As they were in an exit aisle I couldn’t really hear their convo but did manage to get out that the girl was traveling back to Canada and the other 3 to New Zealand. I concluded that this mom and dad were setting up for an arranged married of their son and this girl and had wined and dined her in the Caribbean (where we were flying from) to seal the deal. Of course, it could have been a family friend or a variety of other things than an arrange marriage, but hey.

Another example:

I was out to dinner the other night with my husband and there was a table of 4 adults and 2 children. The adults consisted of a (clearly) husband and wife duo who were Asian and two Caucasian men. The children, 2 and an infant appeared to be the husband and wife’s children. The baby was held most of the dinner by either of the two gentlemen and I didn’t see the husband or wife hold the baby for more than the few minutes while the wife breastfed the baby. I sat most of our dinner trying to figure out this dynamic. My scenario: The husband and wife were surrogates to the other 2 guys who were also married. This was some sort of “thank you for carrying our baby for us” dinner. Of course the more probable scenario was that they were just family friends, but my mind likes to wander.

It doesn’t matter who you are or what you’re doing. If I sink my brain into you and whoever you are with, I will come up with some outlandish story about what you’re doing. I’m always tempted to walk up to some of these people and say “Hey, I’ve been watching you and I think ____________.” I don’t necessarily think this will go over the best on some of my more outlandish stories, but one day I might just ask someone. Stay tuned for that story. I’m always asking my husband if he does the same thing in his mind. He never does and, quite frankly, he looks at me kinda crazy when I tell him some of the stories I’ve come up with. I still don’t think it is weird that I do it. He is the weird one.

Who is Cocktails & Confetti?

This is also my “about” page, but for those of you who have stumbled upon this site and are wondering what the heck it is supposed to be! Look no further!

Hi Everyone! I’m Rachel Jenney, formerly Rachel Bosyj but as of May 10, 2014 I’m a married woman! My hubby and I are doing something a little more unique for our honeymoon. We bought an RV and are going to travel the US over a few months. I’ve always wanted to blog and figured this would be the perfect opportunity to start. I started blogging on rvhoneymoon.com (check it out if you want, I’m pretty proud of it thus far) about 2 months ago just about the prep work for the trip and about our upcoming wedding. I have enjoyed blogging so I decided to start another one. This one much more broad and universal. And so, cocktailsandconfetti.com was born!

I’m a 25 year old Pinterest Fanatic who enjoys cocktails, being a little over dramatic, reality TV, making messes and crafts. I’m a lover of Pure Barre, the beach, my Kindle and my family and friends. I love social media: Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, Blogging, Twitter (in that order, sorry Twitter, I just can’t get into you no matter how many times I try) I also tend to think I’m sarcastic and funny in just the right way (that is to be determined however). I feel just as at home when I am alone or when I am in a huge crowd. I love spending 2 hours+ getting ready and dressing up and I love rolling out of bed and running errands in sweats and no makeup.

This isn’t a fashion blog or a recipe sharing blog. It isn’t a travel blog or a current events blog. It isn’t about working and/or exercising. I am most certainly not an expert in anything nor will I try to get you to love everything I write about. But I will share my thoughts and opinions on anything and everything. You will see a little of everything I mentioned above and a wide variety of other things as well.

I’m not über passionate about any one specific topic but I am passionate about LIFE. I hope that you find something on cocktailsandconfetti.com that falls in like with a passion of yours or that this helps you find your passion!

As always, comments, suggestions or critiques are always welcomed and appreciated!

Rachel

Today’s The Day

I guess today is as good as any to start blogging on here. I tried to come up with the perfect first post but I’ve decided that I’m having writers block and that just won’t do anymore. I’m going to take the easy road out and start by sharing an inspirational quote because everyone loves those right? Today just happens to be Wednesday and Wednesday’s deserve the most attention in my opinion.
